This photograph was made soon after eight of these members of the Zagranichny and Raizen families escaped from the Ukraine. They temporarily lived in Rovno with their uncle/cousin Dovid Zagranichny. There they arranged for the continuation of their voyage to the United States traveling in separate groups, several to Nova Scotia, others to Ellis Island at New York or to Galveston, TX. They all then settled in Oklahoma.
Nachman Zagranichny, (son of Elye and Krenie), could not emigrate with the group in 1919 because a physical deformity would encumber their escape. His daughter, Pessia Zagranichna, was drafted at age 16 into the Russian Army during World War II. She survived the war, married then divorced, and then lived in Israel.
8Morris was in Rovno having traveled from Enid, OK in 1921 to go with his mother, Ronia, to Albia, IA where she joined her husband (his father), Jacob (Jaacob), who had emigrated in 1913. 8Morris earlier emigrated in1905 and his brother, Samuel Singer (Shmilik), emigrated in 1907/. Ruchel’s and Sosel's husbands also earlier immigrated to the United States.
Frayde, Shaindele and Nechama remained with their families in Poland.
Other relatives living in the Ukraine and Poland immigrated to Argentina, to the United States and to Canada. Among them were Jossef Elias Zagranichny and his brother, Aaron Zagranichny, sons of Chaim Itzik and Krenie, who immigrated to Argentina. Leona Zagraniczna, daughter of Yaakov Zar (Jacob) and Mania Zagraniczny, immigrated in 1938 to Tulsa, Oklahoma and soon afterwards to Duncan, Oklahoma. Her father had immigrated to New York in 1912.
Almost all Zagranichnys who remained in the Ukraine and in Poland perished during World War II. Among them were uncles, aunts and cousins of those pictured above and mother , sisters, aunts and uncles of Leona Zagraniczna Trachtenberg. Leona’s uncle (her mother’s brother Victor Hochberg) was a leader in the Warsaw Getto Resistance Movement helping many Jews in Poland to survive. Several surviving persons emigrated to Israel. Pesia Zagranichna from the age of 16 years was conscripted by the Russian Army; after WWII she returned to the Korostyshev area, married then emigrated to Israel.
